Moro Lasso - a song for unseen singer

A strange piece written during rehearsals for Die Brück am Tay.  Endymion wanted something to go with some Scelsi and Berio in the first half of a concert at Cheltenham; the second half was to be the premiere of Birtwistle's Orpheus Elegies.  I took as the starting point the four chords that start Gesualdo's madrigal of the same name and wrote a set of glosses over them.  At the end of the piece, an offstage coutertenor (Andrew Watts at the first performance) sings the final variation

Scoring is clarinet, flute, viola, harp, trombone and countertenor.  It looks very simple on the page but is beastly difficult!
